Should You Fly After Getting Your Tooth Extracted?

Airplane on an airport tarmac

Are you constantly in and out of airports? You might be a frequent flyer for work or fun, but you may know how hard it is to fit appointments into your schedule. You may plan ahead, but your recovery is something that will need to be accounted for. This is especially true if you are getting a tooth extracted. Here is what you should expect with this procedure and flying.

Is It Smart to Fly After a Tooth Extraction?

In short, it isn’t recommended to hop on an airplane right after having a tooth removed. Your body will need to heal, and this method of travel can be uncomfortable. The cabin pressure and altitude can increase your risk of an infection or dry socket, which is a condition that causes severe pain.

It’s best to give yourself ample time to rest, so try to wait at least a week before heading on your next trip. If need be, you may be able to go three to four days after your treatment.

What Should I Do If I Have to Fly After a Tooth Extraction?

With that said, you may attempt to put off your flight, but there are some instances where this isn’t possible. If so, then here is what you should do to make your journey easier after an extraction:

  • Take over-the-counter and prescribed medication as needed. Have them in your carry-on, so you have an effective pain reliever easily accessible.
  • Have a few water bottles handy to drink. You’ll be able to stay hydrated and wash away harmful bacteria; that way, you prevent dry socket.
  • Bring a small plastic baggie and ask your flight attendant to fill it with ice. Wrap it in a cloth to make a cold pack that can ease your discomfort. Apply it for 15-minute intervals to avoid irritating your skin.
  • Pack extra gauze if you are flying right after your treatment. You’ll likely need to swap out the one your dentist put in.

In the end, try your best to wait at least a week before packing your suitcase. You may be able to do it sooner if necessary, but make sure you bring someone you trust with you. They can give you better peace of mind knowing they are there for you if you need help. Once you do reach your destination, give yourself the time you need to relax and heal.
