Spotting the Sneak: Here’s How to Find a Cavity Between Your Teeth

Cavities that form on the front of your teeth are often easy to see—just look for the white or brown spots. However, not every cavity forms out in the open. More often than not, they like to hide between your teeth where it’s hard to fit a toothbrush. Here’s what to look for to find these sneaky spots of decay, so you know when to call your dentist for fillings.

Why These Cavities Are Harder to Notice

The tight crevices between your teeth create the perfect hiding spot for plaque and bacteria. Unlike a cavity on a visible surface, decay between teeth often grows undetected until it’s more advanced, since your toothbrush can’t reach it, and your eyes can’t easily see it. This is exactly why interdental cavities are the ones most frequently caught during dental X-rays, as opposed to visual inspections.

Signs You Might Have One

Even though these cavities are hard to see, they often leave clues behind. Watch for:

  • Sensitivity or pain when eating something hot, cold, or sweet.
  • A dull ache that lingers after eating, especially when chewing on one side.
  • Visible dark spots between teeth when viewed from certain angles, especially near your gumline.
  • Floss that catches or frays in the same spot—this can indicate a rough or broken area between your teeth.
  • Bad breath or an unpleasant taste that doesn’t seem to go away with brushing.

If you notice any of these signs, it’s worth scheduling an early checkup instead of waiting for your next regular visit.

Why Early Detection Matters

Cavities between teeth tend to move fast. Because the enamel layer in these tight contact areas isn’t as thick as the chewing surface above it, decay can reach the softer inner layer (dentin) quickly. Left untreated, a small cavity can worsen into needing a crown, a root canal, or even extraction.

How Your Dentist Finds Them

X-rays are the most reliable way to catch cavities between teeth, often before any symptoms appear at all! This is just another reason why regular checkups are so critical to your dental health, even when nothing feels wrong. If a cavity is caught early, treatment is generally far simpler, often only needing a filling with tooth-colored composite.

Protecting the Spaces Between Your Teeth

Daily flossing is one of the most effective ways to prevent interdental cavities, since it can reach the spaces a toothbrush can’t. There are many tools available beyond normal floss, too, including floss threaders, picks, and water flossers. So, you can usually find an alternative that works for you.

If you think you might have a cavity between your teeth, don’t wait for it to get worse—call your dentist. They can scan your smile and catch small issues before they become a big pain.
